Find Your ROI

Know your costs and know your business!

By knowing your Return on Investment (ROI) you can determine the costs to produce graphics, the amount of print volume’s cost and price required to pay off the capital investment, and the amount of profit that can be seen at a monthly basis.

According to Xerox, “One of the most common reasons to calculate return on investment is to validate a proposal’s potential cost savings.”

ROI Calculation

ROI can be expressed in a simple formula: (Benefits – Costs)/Costs = ROI

You can use the ROI calculation to do more than validate savings, but also measure the impact of projects and productivity, IT infrastructure, competitive positioning, and/or reduce a project’s environmental impact.

So what is involved in an ROI calculation?

Gross Revenue

Gross revenue includes price per square foot that the printed piece is expected to sell for and adjusting “hours printing per day” value for volume of work shown or availability of staff to operate the printer.

This feature also allows you to input print speeds, wastage value, and other calculated values that are useful in determining how much blank substrate is required for a specific volume of work and what would be invoiced per month for the total printed work.

Material Costs

Material costs are just that; material. They include items such as:

  • Substrates and UV lamps
  • Substrate type and sheet size
  • Amount purchased
  • Vendor

Depending on all of these variables can affect the total cost considerably.


Amount paid to operators per hour + Amount of time allocated to an operator to run the printer and conduct related tasks = Daily cost for the operator to run work on the printer. Calculating this gives you, both, the calculated monthly labor cost and combined monthly labor and materials cost.

Additionally, Investment and Return includes the total amount of the printer purchase, as well as related items including:

What’s the difference between copy machine speeds?

Copier speeds are sorted by six segments:

  • Segment 1 – 11-20 ppm
  • Segment 2 – 21-30 ppm

  • Segment 5 – 70-90 ppm
  • Segment 6 – 91+ ppm
